A set that is speced well sells itself twice — once to the distributor and again to the end user who comes back for the next size up. The first decision is not which bits to include; it is who will use the set. A homeowner set should cover common household tasks with modest piece counts and forgiving geometry. An industrial set is usually a carefully chosen collection of loose drills in a shadowed tray rather than a retail box, ordered by the toolroom to match the machines it runs.
Trying to serve all three users with one product usually fails. The homeowner resents paying for a hundred sizes he will never use, and the tradesman rejects a set whose case is bigger than his toolbox. Define the target user, then build the set to that user's job list.
Material Coverage: What Belongs in the Box

Professional sets use a hinged case with a positive latch, a moulded insert that grips each bit by its shank, and a size index printed or embossed beside each pocket so a missing bit is obvious at a glance.
The case is also the first thing a buyer sees on the shelf. A clear cover that shows the bits, a printed size chart on the lid, and a case that stands or hangs for display all move the product at retail. For distributors the case is part of the SKU's logistics: it should stack, survive transit and accept a barcode label without covering the contents.
Retail-Ready Detailing
A set that is destined for retail shelves needs more than contents. Each bit should be marked with its size — stamped or laser-engraved on the shank — because users sort loose bits by the marking once the set leaves the case. A printed size chart on the case back or lid converts an ambiguous collection into a reference tool. Packaging should carry clear specifications: steel grade, coating, point geometry and the material range, stated in terms a buyer can act on, not marketing adjectives.
Barcoding and item data deserve attention at the specification stage rather than as an afterthought. Distributors need correct EAN or UPC data, carton quantities that match their picking systems, and product imagery that shows the actual case contents. A set that is difficult to list, pick or reorder will be delisted regardless of how good the drills are.
Matching the Set to the Market
Finally, match the set programme to the channel. Online marketplaces favour clear photography, honest piece counts and sets that ship flat and light. Traditional hardware retail favours hanging cards, visible contents and a size range that matches the local wall-fixing and DIY conventions. Wholesale and industrial channels favour refillable systems and single-size bulk packs that sit beside the set on the shelf.
